The concept of a smart home has grown significantly in recent years. We have made several steps forward from just lighting, when today we already have at our disposal, for example, smart thermostatic heads, locks, weather stations, heating systems, sensors and many others. The so-called smart home is a great technological gadget with a clear goal - to make people's everyday lives easier.

If you are interested in the concept itself and possibly have some experience with it, then you may know that when building your own smart home, you may encounter a rather fundamental problem. In advance, it is necessary to realize what platform you will actually run on, and you also have to choose individual products accordingly. Apple offers its own HomeKit for these cases, or a popular alternative is also the use of solutions from Google or Amazon. In practice, it works quite simply. If you have a home built on Apple HomeKit, you cannot use a device that is not compatible. Fortunately, this problem is solved by the brand new Matter standard, which aims to eliminate these imaginary barriers and the smart home.

The new standard of Matter

As we mentioned above, the current problem of the smart home lies in its overall fragmentation. Moreover, the mentioned solutions from Apple, Amazon and Google are not the only ones. Subsequently, even smaller manufacturers come with their own platforms, which causes even more confusion and problems. This is exactly what Matter is supposed to solve and unify the concept of a smart home, from which people promise overall simplification and accessibility. Although earlier projects had similar ambitions, Matter is a little different in this respect – it is backed by leading technology companies that have agreed on a common goal and are working together on an ideal solution. You can read more about the Matter standard in the article attached below.

Is Matter the right move?

But now let's move on to the essentials. Is Matter a step in the right direction and is it really the solution we as users have been looking for for so long? At first glance, the standard looks really promising, and the fact that companies like Apple, Amazon and Google are behind it gives it a certain credibility. But let's pour some pure wine - that still means nothing at all. Some hope and reassurance that we are moving in the right direction technologically comes now on the occasion of the technology conference CES 2023. This conference is attended by a number of technology companies that present their most interesting news, prototypes and visions. However, it should be noted that Apple is not participating.

On this occasion, a number of companies presented new products for the smart home, and they are united by a rather interesting feature. They support the new Matter standard. So this is clearly what most fans want to hear. Technology companies are responding positively and relatively quickly to the standard, which is a clear indication that we are moving in the right direction. On the other hand, it is definitely not won. Time and its subsequent development, as well as its implementation by other companies, will show whether the Matter standard will really be an ideal solution.
