iOS 4.2.1 was officially released this Monday and within a few hours the iPhone Dev Team released a jailbreak for this update that works on almost all Apple iDevices. Specifically, it is redsn0w 0.9.6b4.

Unfortunately, for new devices, it is a so-called tethered jailbreak, that is, when you turn off and on the device, you have to boot again using the Redsn0w application on your computer, which is very annoying for users.

However, this problem is only for newer devices – iPhone 3GS (new iBoot), iPhone 4, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad. So Untethered only applies to: iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS and some iPod Touch 2G.

But the Dev Team promised that they are working intensively on the untethered version for all iDevices, so we could easily expect it any day. For the impatient or owners of older devices, we bring instructions. This redsn0w jailbreak can be done on both Windows and Mac.

Jailbreak step by step using redsn0w

We will need:

  • a computer with a Mac or Windows operating system,
  • connected iDevice to the computer,
  • iTunes
  • redsn0w application.

1. Download the application

Create a new folder on your desktop into which we will download the redsn0w application. You have download links on the Dev-Team website, for both Mac and Windows.

2. Download the .ipsw file

Next, you need to download the iOS 4.2.1 .ipsw file for your device, if you don't have it, you can find it here . Save this .ipsw file in the same folder as you did in step 1.

3. Unpacking

Unzip the redsn0w.zip file into the same folder created above.

4. iTunes

Open iTunes and connect your device. After performing the backup, including the completion of the synchronization, click on the device you have connected in the left menu. Then hold down the option key on Mac (shift on Windows) and click the button "Restore". A window will pop up where you can select the .ipsw file you saved.

5. Redsn0w app

After the update is finished in iTunes, run the redsn0w app, click the button “Browse” and load the already mentioned downloaded .ipsw file. Then double tap on "Next".

6. Preparation

Now the app will prepare data for jailbreak. In the next window, you will be able to choose what you want to do with the iPhone. I recommend ticking only "Install Cydia" (if you have an iPhone 3G or a device without a battery status indicator in percentages, mark also "Enable battery percentage"). Then put again "Next".

7. DFU mode

Make sure your connected device is turned off. If not, connect your device to the computer and then turn it off. Click on "Next". Now you will perform DFU mode. It's nothing to worry about, plus redsn0w will guide you how to do it.

8.Jailbreak

After performing the DFU mode correctly, the redsn0w application will automatically recognize the device in this mode and start performing the jailbreak.

9. Done

The process is complete and all you have to do is click "Finish".

If you have a device that only tethered jailbreaks and you need to reboot (after turning it off and on), connect it to your computer. Run the redsn0w application and select the option "Just boot tethered right now" (see picture).

If you have any problems while jailbreaking your apple device, please let us know in the comments. For owners of newer devices, I can only lament the now available tethered jailbreak.

Almost all of us know what an excellent job the hackers from the iPhone Dev Team or the Chronic Dev Team do. It doesn't matter if we take it from the point of view of jailbreak fans or from the point of view of its opponents (hackers discover security flaws that Apple will close with the next update), and therefore I am almost sure that the next version of the jailbreak will be released very soon and will be untethered for all iOS 4.2.1 devices .XNUMX.
