From Wednesday, May 23 to Friday, May 25, Display Week is taking place in Los Angeles, which on the first day showed who will be its leader and who will be talked about even after its end. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's Samsung. He showed the future of flexible and differently folded displays, which Apple fans can currently only dream about.

We may not like it, but that's just the way it is. Samsung is the leader in the field of displays in general, but it clearly runs away from the others in the folding ones. Logically, this is also due to the fact that it has a separate division that deals only with displays. However, we are sure that something is brewing at Apple as well, but its different strategy does not give us any insight under the hood of Apple Park.

Samsung Display Week 1

Apple would be foolish and naive to still think that there is no future in flexible displays. We don't know what exactly is going on in Cupertino, but it's quite possible that in the basements there they are diligently working on various flexible concepts that can be folded and folded in any way, but Apple doesn't feel the need to show anything to the world before it's ready. Samsung is different in this and it works.

Roll-up display and bend on both sides

RollableFlex is a rollable display that can "stretch" from 49 to 254,4 mm. It can thus increase its original size up to 5x as needed, which is unique, as competitive solutions presented so far can only do this 3x. There is no need to think about practicality yet, we don't have a real product here, we just see how such a display would look and work.

The more interesting is certainly the display named as Flex In & Out. It is evident from the name that it can be bent inwards and outwards. The first one is more like the Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip, the second one, as the competition already does, but you can't fold it inside. Here you will be able to choose how you would use such a smartphone, and in addition, the necessity of equipping the device with an external display could be removed, which could make it not only cheaper, but also thinner and ultimately lighter. And yes, of course we also get rid of the unsightly groove.

Perhaps the most interesting thing is the OLED display, which can scan your fingerprint wherever you place it on the display. We don't know this in the Apple world, because we have Face ID here, but the best Android phones boast various fingerprint readers built directly into the display. However, their limitation is that they recognize the fingerprint only in a designated place. So you could put your finger anywhere in this solution. However, we would expect something like this from Apple if it ever came up with a fingerprint scanner in iPhones.

In addition, this display can measure blood pressure, heart rate and stress level, thanks to an integrated biosensor. It can do so after placing one finger, if you place two (one from each hand), the measurement is even more accurate.

Where is the buried dog?

Samsung Display is a division dealing with displays, not end devices. So it can present practically anything, but someone else has to come up with the concept of how to implement this solution, for example, on a smartphone or tablet. So the vision is nice and impressive, but it's still just a vision until we have a tangible product here.

On the other hand, it shows the very effort of the company to push certain boundaries, which we do not see, for example, with Apple. However, how long we will have to wait for the finished solution is, of course, in the stars. We may never even have to wait for it, if time proves it to be pointless. We don't want to advise Apple, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to show something more than just generally known things from time to time. It's a huge company that has the potential to do this, it just doesn't want to reveal its cards, which is different from Samsung, which wants to be in the center of the action.
