The so-called VOD services have changed the meaning of visual content consumption. Video on Demand is a current trend, because its content is relatively cheap and, above all, relatively comprehensive. Along with Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, it is also offered by Apple, which is why it is rather surprising that it publishes its content on a possibly already dead medium – the Blu-ray disc.

For All Mankind was one of the flagship projects when the company introduced its new Apple TV+ service. But the subject is undoubtedly engaging. Imagine a world where the global space race never ended. It is thus an alternative conception of history in which USSR cosmonauts were the first to land on the moon. The fact that the series was a success is also evidenced by its third season, ongoing preparations for the fourth, as well as the fact that the first season will be released on Blu-ray next month.

The two-disc set is being published in collaboration with Apple TV+ by British label Dazzler Media, and it justifies the move by making the title available to people who want to own it physically. It will cost 22,99 GBP, i.e. approx. 875 CZK. At the same time, For All Mankind is not the first Apple TV+ production that will be available on Blu-ray, as the series Defending Jacob has already received it.

Against the current and its meaning

It's a bit paradoxical when you consider the direction in which all film production is going, that everything is now moving more into the virtual streaming space and Blu-ray players are more or less dying out. The idea of bringing your production on physical media is nice, but does it make sense? After all, Apple itself has been fighting against similar technology ever since the introduction of the first MacBook Air, which did not even offer a DVD drive, which Apple finally said goodbye to after 2015, when it was also removed from MacBook Pros. So even if you buy the Blu-ray edition of For All Mankind, you won't actually be able to play it on Apple products.

The price can also be surprising. If you are really interested in the series, you can subscribe to Apple TV+ for a month for "only" CZK 139. And you can certainly handle the entire series. Plus, if you haven't already been an Apple TV+ customer, you get three months of free streaming for free. Owning a physical carrier seems to be a real survival these days, and this move by Apple, the promoter of everything wireless, is rather pointless.
