It is no news that the Wearables category, which includes the Apple Watch and AirPods, is bringing in more and more money for Apple. Last year, these items accounted for more than a quarter of the company's global sales, and Apple nearly doubled its nearest competitor in that area. At the end of the year, sales of the Apple Watch and AirPods were truly record-breaking, and Apple literally won the lion's share of the wearable electronics market.

According to the company IDC Apple sold 46,2 million pieces of wearable electronics products last year. This means a year-on-year increase of 39,5% for the company. Apple's wearable electronics sales grew by 2018% in the fourth quarter of 21,5, when the company managed to sell 16,2 million of these devices, giving it a commanding first place in the ranking.

10,4 million devices sold out of this number are the Apple Watch, the rest are wireless AirPods and Beats headphones. According to IDC, the latest Apple Watch Series 4, which Apple has enriched with functions such as the ability to capture an ECG or fall detection, are largely responsible for this huge success.

While we could expect the second generation of AirPods this month, the next Apple Watch will most likely have to wait until the fall of this year at the earliest. If Apple introduces a new generation of Apple Watch this year, it will probably do so traditionally along with the launch of new iPhones.

As far as the competition is concerned, Xiaomi took second place with 23,3 million smart watches and headphones sold. Xiaomi traditionally recorded the strongest sales last year in its home country of China. Fitbit took third place in 2018, but in the fourth quarter of last year it took fourth place. Overall, Fitbit sold 13,8 million devices last year. The fourth place in the number of devices sold for the whole of last year was occupied by Huawei, which, however, managed to overtake Fitbit in the last quarter of 2018. Samsung took fifth place.

The wearable electronics market as such saw an increase of 27,5% last year, according to IDC, headphones in particular are the biggest contributors to this.
