Apple has released an iOS update for its Apple TV set-top box. The new version 5.1 adds support for Shared Photo Streams, which are new in the iOS 6 operating system. The ability to send audio from Apple TV to speakers and other devices that support AirPlay or are connected via AirPort Express has also been added. So it will be possible, for example, to play a movie using an application on the iPhone, while the Apple TV will send the image to the TV and the sound to separate speakers. This eliminates the need to use an optical cable for such a connection.

The update can be downloaded directly through the Apple TV menu, in the tab Settings > General > Update. Here is the full list of changes in the new software:

  • Shared Photo Streams — the ability to receive invitations to Shared Photo Streams, view photos and comments, and receive notifications about new content.
  • AirPlay — send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs). It is possible to turn on a passcode lock to restrict the use of AirPlay with your Apple TV.
  • iTunes account switching — save multiple iTunes accounts and quickly switch between them.
  • Trailers — search for movie trailers. In the US, it is possible to search for screenings in local cinemas.
  • Screensavers — new Cascade, Shrinking Tiles, Sliding Panels.
  • Main Menu — it is now possible to rearrange the icons on the second page by holding down the Select button on the remote control.
  • Subtitles — support subtitles for the hearing impaired and improve the display and selection of subtitles
  • Network configuration — the ability to specify advanced network settings using configuration profiles.
  • Stability and performance — includes performance and stability improvements.
