There was already a lot of talk about it in connection with the new HomePod, which Apple showed us in the case of its 2nd generation, but it definitely did not bring any expansion that could accommodate something like a smart home display. Even so, Apple is said to be working on it.

The Apple Smart Home Display is intended to serve as a center for managing a smart home. Although Apple TV and HomePod are certain home hubs, and practically all Apple devices can control the smart home, there is still one hole that has already been closed by the competition. At the same time, we are waiting for Apple's solution.

It's an iPad and it's not an iPad, what is it?

It should only be a kind of smart display, not a tablet, i.e. in the case of the Apple iPad. Although it will look very similar to it, when it could be based on the iPad 10th Generation, it should be possible to attach it to the wall and other objects (for example, the refrigerator) with the help of a set of magnets so that it is in the most frequented place of the household, i.e. in his center. Both HomeKit and Matter support is a matter of course.

Its purpose would also be that it could be used by visitors who, for example, do not have iPhones or other Apple products. The possibility of using several such displays that communicate with each other is also assumed. The original idea was that it would also connect to the HomePod, which would be its docking station. Maybe we'll see HomePod mini 2nd generation, for example.

Limited features

Of course, the operating system will be here, but certainly only somewhat limited. Except for controlling the smart home, the device should be able to handle FaceTime calls at most. For that reason, there is no need for a super-powerful chip, when an older one would be used, it would also save on the quality of the display, so that it would not be more profitable to buy an iPad of the 9th generation.

The competition already has its solution

Apple's solution would clearly compete with other smart home devices from Facebook, Amazon and Google. For example, Facebook makes Meta Portal, which can control Alexa-based products, and which also enables video calling. Amazon, on the other hand, produces a 10" Echo Show display, which can be used not only to control a smart home and make calls, but also to watch videos. Google then has the Nest Hub Max, which is also based on online content streaming.

Considering that almost all of Apple's main competitors offer their truly home devices, which are intended to serve as a center for controlling smart home products and calling, it is not difficult to imagine that Apple itself would rush with a similar product. According to realistic estimates, it could be in 2024. But if you haven't penetrated the smart home yet, it's obvious that it won't exactly target you. Availability is also a question, which depends on the level of Siri integration. Apple does not officially sell HomePods here either.
