Apple today announced a new program to recall older 15-inch MacBook Pros. According to Apple, models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 have defective batteries that are at risk of overheating and thus pose a safety risk.

The problem specifically concerns the older generation of 15″ MacBook Pros from 2015, i.e. models with classic USB ports, MagSafe, Thunderbolt 2 and the original keyboard. You can find out if you have this MacBook by simply clicking on apple-menu () in the upper left corner, where you then choose About this Mac. If your listing shows "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)", then copy the serial number and verify it at this page.

Apple itself states that if you own a model that falls under the program, you should stop using your MacBook and seek authorized service. Even before your visit, a data backup is recommended. Trained technicians will replace your laptop battery and the replacement process can take 2-3 weeks. However, the service will be completely free of charge for you.

V press release, where Apple is announcing the voluntary recall, notes that MacBook Pros other than those listed above are not affected. Owners of the newer generation, which was revealed in 2016, do not suffer from the aforementioned ailment.
