The Amsterdam Apple Store on the Leidseplein right in the heart of the Dutch capital was evacuated and temporarily closed on Sunday afternoon. Fumes from a burning battery of one of the iPads were to blame.

According to initial local media reports AT5NH News a iCulture the battery in the apple tablet overheated due to higher temperatures. Three visitors inhaled fumes from the ignited battery and had to be taken to the care of paramedics.

Some photos from the evacuation:

Due to the prompt response of Apple Store employees, who immediately placed the iPad in a special container of sand, there was no further injury or damage to the store's equipment. Less than an hour after the incident, when firefighters checked the area, the Apple Store was reopened to the public.

However, this is not the first time that a similar accident has occurred at an Apple brick-and-mortar store. Earlier this year, the Apple Store in Zurich was similarly evacuated, where an iPhone battery exploded for a change. Even so, such incidents are relatively rare, as only a small percentage of lithium-ion batteries can overheat, swell and explode.
