Apple is about to reincarnate Touch ID in iPhones. But not as we know it. Engineers from Cupertino plan to build a fingerprint sensor directly into the display. The sensor should complement the current Face ID and could appear in iPhones as early as next year.

Rumors that Apple is trying to implement Touch ID in the display of its phones have been appearing more and more recently. Early last month with them bailed out famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and today the news comes from respected journalist Mark Gurman of the agency Bloomberg, who is really sporadically wrong in his predictions.

Like Kuo, Gurman also claims that Apple plans to offer a new generation of Touch ID alongside the current Face ID. The user will then be able to choose whether to unlock his iPhone with the help of a fingerprint or a face. It is the option of choice that can come in handy in specific situations where one of the methods may not work completely correctly (for example, Face ID when wearing a motorcycle helmet) and the user can thus choose a second method of biometric authentication.

Apparently, Apple is working with selected suppliers and has already managed to create the first prototypes. It is unclear when engineers will develop the technology to a level where production can begin. According to Bloomberg, the iPhone could already offer Touch ID in the display next year. However, a delay to the next generation is also not excluded. Ming-Chi Kuo is more inclined to the option that the fingerprint sensor under the display will appear in iPhones in 2021.

A number of competing companies already offer the fingerprint sensor under the display in their phones, for example Samsung or Huawei. They mostly use sensors from Qualcomm, which allows you to scan papillary lines on a fairly large area. But Apple could offer a slightly more sophisticated technology, where fingerprint scanning would work across the entire surface of the display. That society tends to develop just such a sensor, recent patents also prove it.
