What color is iconic for Apple? Of course, mainly white. But is it true even today? At least not with iPhones. The company understood that users want a more cheerful appearance of their devices, and now presents us with a rich palette, which is also gradually expanding.

The first iPhone, referred to as the 2G, was neither white nor black, but it was still distinctive for the company, as it had an aluminum construction with black plastic to shield the antennas. And since the first aluminum MacBook Pro was introduced back in 2007, Apple wanted to bet on a similar design. After all, even iPods were made of aluminum.

However, Apple removed this material right away with the next generation, when it introduced the iPhone 3G with its white and black plastic back. The same was repeated with the iPhone 3GS generation and also with the iPhone 4/4S. But it had already been redesigned, when it had a steel frame and a glass back. But we still only had two color variants. The subsequent iPhone 5 was already in silver and black, in the first case because the structure was aluminum.

However, the successor in the form of the 5S model came with space gray and newly incorporated the gold color, which was later supplemented by rose gold in the case of the first generation SE model or the iPhone 6S and 7. This was a quartet of colors that Apple then used in its iPhone line for a long time period, but which was also reflected in the MacBook portfolio. However, along with the iPhone 5S, Apple introduced the iPhone 5C, in which it first experimented with colors. Its polycarbonate back was available in white, green, blue, yellow and pink. Surprisingly, it was not too successful.

New Age

Even though from time to time a special (PRODUCT)RED color of a given generation of iPhone came, or in the case of the iPhone 7 a Jet Black version, Apple fully broke away only with the generation of the iPhone XR, which was introduced in 2018 together with the iPhone XS (which still had settled portfolio of three colors, previous model X only two). However, the XR model was available in black, white, blue, yellow, coral and also (PRODUCT)RED red and set a new trend.

The iPhone 11 was already available in six colors, the iPhone 11 Pro in four, when midnight green expanded the mandatory trio. Even the iPhone 12 offers six colors, when purple was additionally added last spring. The 12 Pro series, on the other hand, swapped midnight green for pacific blue and space gray for graphite gray. 5 colors were introduced with the iPhone 13, which now received a new green, the 13 Pro series replaced Pacific blue with mountain blue, but for the first time its portfolio of colors was also expanded, with alpine green.

With the iPhone 12, Apple left the black color, because the successor is offered in dark ink. The typical white has also been replaced by star white. The old habits are definitely gone now that Apple is expanding the iPhone Pro line. And it's good. The customer thus has more to choose from, and the presented colors are very pleasant after all. But he could easily experiment even further, because the competition from Android phones also has various rainbow colors or those that react to heat and change accordingly.
