As the currently tested iOS 12 operating system reaches more users (thanks to the open beta test launched yesterday), new information and insights that users have observed during testing are appearing on the web. Today afternoon for example, information appeared on the website that will please all iPad owners from 2017.

First of all, it is necessary to point out that the fact described below applies to the current version of the operating system, i.e. the second developer and first public beta of iOS 12. Owners of iPads from 2017 (and also owners of iPad Air 2nd generation) can take advantage of extended options in iOS 12 multitasking, which were previously exclusively for iPad Pro. This is the possibility of simultaneously working with up to three open application panels on one (two windows via Split view and the third via Slide over). Newer iPads (from the 2nd generation Air model) could use the so-called Slide over for two open and active applications at the same time. Three open applications at the same time have always been a privilege of the iPad Pro, mainly due to higher performance and a significantly larger size of operating memory. It seems that now even 2GB of RAM is enough to display and use three applications at once.

This change is most likely related to the improved optimization of iOS 12, which makes it possible to make some hardware-intensive functions available to less powerful devices. It is questionable whether Apple will maintain this status, or whether it is just testing that will be limited to the current version of the beta test. However, if you have an iPad from 2017 and have the latest iOS 12 beta installed on it, you can try working with three open windows. It works exactly the same as in the variant for two windows (Split view), only you can add a third one to the display using the Slide over function. If you are confused about the multitasking capabilities of the iPad, I recommend the article linked above, where everything is described in one video.
