More than a quarter of a year has passed since the introduction of the latest iPhone 12. If you watched the presentation (along with us), you may have noticed that Apple mentioned support for the Apple ProRAW format with the iPhone 12 Pro. This mode is mainly intended for professional photographers who want to edit all their photos manually in post-processing. If you would like to know more about the Apple ProRAW format, just read this article until the end.

What does ProRAW mean?

As already mentioned in the introduction, ProRAW is a photo format. The term "shooting in RAW" is very common among professional photographers, and it can be said that every photographer uses the RAW format. If you shoot in RAW, the image is not modified in any way and does not go through any beautification procedures, as is the case with the JPG format, for example. The RAW format simply does not decide how the photo looks, because the photographer in question will edit it himself in the appropriate program anyway. Some of you might argue that JPG can be edited in the same way - that's true, but RAW carries many times more data, allowing for more editing without damaging the image in any way. Specifically, ProRAW is then a classic effort by Apple, which only created an original name and the principle is exactly the same in the end. So ProRAW is Apple RAW.

Where can ProRAW be used?

If you want to shoot in RAW format on your iPhone, you need the latest iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max. If you have an "ordinary" iPhone 12 or 12 mini, or an older iPhone, you cannot natively take photos in ProRAW. However, there are various apps that can be used to activate RAW even on older iPhones – such as Halide. In addition, you must have iOS 14.3 and later installed on your "Pro" - ProRAW is not available in older versions. Also, keep in mind that photos in RAW format take up several times more storage space. Specifically, Apple states around 25 MB per photo. The basic 128 GB should be enough for you, but a larger storage capacity certainly won't hurt. So if you are going to buy the new iPhone 12 Pro (Max) and take a lot of photos, take the storage size into consideration.

How to activate ProRAW?

If you meet all of the above requirements and want to shoot in RAW, all you have to do is activate the function - it is disabled by default. Specifically, you need to move to the native app on your iOS device Settings, where you then go down a piece below. Here it is necessary to find and click on the box Camera, where now move to the section Formats. Finally, you just need to use the do switch activated function Apple ProRAW. If you go to the Camera after activation, a small icon in the upper right corner of the screen informs you about active shooting in RAW. The good news is that after activation in the settings, you can quickly and easily (de)activate ProRAW directly in the Camera. Just click on the mentioned icon - if it is crossed out, you will shoot in JPG, if it is not, then in RAW.

Do I want to shoot in RAW?

Most of you are probably now wondering if you should shoot in ProRAW at all. The answer to this question in 99% of cases is simply - no. I think that ordinary users do not have the time or desire to edit each image separately on the computer. In addition, these images take up a lot of storage space, which is another problem. An ordinary user would be rather disgusted with the results after activating ProRAW, because before editing these images definitely do not look as good as, for example, JPG. Activating ProRAW should be started primarily by photographers who are not afraid of editing, or by individuals who want to learn how to shoot in RAW. As for editing the RAW photos themselves, if you decide to activate ProRAW, we will refer you to our series Professional iPhone photography, in which you will also learn more about photo editing in addition to the procedures for proper photography.
