Information about another interesting news in iOS 16 is starting to appear among Apple fans. Apparently, we will finally see a change that many users have been calling for for a long time - the possibility of paying through Apple Pay on the web will also be extended to other browsers. For now, Apple Pay only works in the native Safari browser. So if you are using an alternative, for example Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, then you are simply out of luck. However, this should change, and the possibilities of the apple payment method will probably arrive in these two mentioned browsers as well. After all, this results from testing the current beta versions of iOS 16.

Understandably, therefore, a discussion has opened up among Apple users about whether the macOS operating system will also see the same change, or whether it will be possible to use the Apple Pay payment method in other browsers on our Macs as well. But for now, it doesn't look very welcoming. Why is Apple open to this change for iOS, but we most likely won't see it right away for macOS? That's exactly what we're going to shed light on together now.

Apple Pay in other browsers on macOS

The news from the beta version of iOS 16 managed to surprise many apple users. Until recently, practically no one expected that we would see the extension of Apple Pay to other browsers as well. But the question is how it will be in the case of macOS. As we mentioned above, we can't just expect Apple Pay to come to other browsers on our Macs. It also has a relatively simple explanation. The mobile browsers Chrome, Edge and Firefox use the same rendering engine as Safari - the so-called WebKit. The same engine is found in them for a simple reason. Apple has such requirements for browsers distributed for iOS, which is why it is necessary to use its technology directly. That is why it is possible that the expansion of the Apple Pay payment service in this case came a little earlier than we could actually expect.

In the case of macOS, however, the situation is diametrically different. The operating system of apple computers is significantly more open, and other browsers can thus use any rendering engine they want, which could be the main problem for the implementation of the Apple Pay payment service.

Legislative issues

On the other hand, the engine used may not even have anything to do with it. The European Union is currently dealing with how to tame the practically monopolistic technological giants. For these purposes, the EU has prepared the Digital Services Act (DMA), which sets a number of important rules aimed at large companies such as Apple, Meta and Google. So it is possible that the opening of Apple Pay is the first step in how the giant deals with these changes. However, the law itself should not enter into force until the spring of 2023.
