Apple announces the best apps and games in the App Store every year, and this year is no exception. Unfortunately, there is some controversy associated with this, as we do not know of any evaluation metrics. The best application is the BeReal network, the best Apex Legends Mobile game, and both are clearly contradictory.

Apple lists only the following for its selection: "Apps and games have been selected by Apple's global App Store editorial team to deliver exceptional experiences and deep cultural impact." Tim Cook then commented on the choice in a published article press release: “This year's App Store Award winners have reshaped our app experience, bringing fresh, thoughtful and real perspectives. From self-taught to international teams around the world, these entrepreneurs are making a significant impact and representing the ways apps and games are impacting our communities and lives.” But there is a fundamental problem with the winners of both categories.

The BeReal social network is young and, of course, still quite small in contrast to the biggest ones, although it is clearly gaining importance as its original idea is starting to be copied across the bigger players in the market. Her idea is unique, but app of the year? Seriously? If you don't know what the application looks like, it is as simple as possible and skimps on any options and functions. Practically, you just take a picture of the scene with the front and rear camera and publish the result.

You can also view the posts of others or your history in the network. In addition, you launch the application once a day, just when you receive a notification notifying you of inserting new content, which you only have two minutes to do. If you don't, you can't view other people's content. But are we evaluating the idea or the execution here? Or do we just need to promote the given platform as much as possible?

Apex Legends Mobile

Even the Game of the Year winner is controversial. This is because it is a simple port of the adult computer version of the game, which has of course been tuned for playing on mobile phones. So it's actually the same thing that brought Fortnite, which was also originally available on computers and consoles before breaking into the mobile world. Sure, we've got some added content here, but awarding Game of the Year for it?

It is rather a clear message to all mobile players to forget about the unavailable Fortnite, which Apple threw out of the App Store for violating its rules, and to focus on another battle royale title. In addition, at this price, the company says that it is the best thing you can install on iPhones in 2022. And it's sad.

More than quality and originality, the current results reflect trends. There is a lot of talk about BeReal, so let's add some more. Fortnite is always being talked about, so let's cut it down for good. From my personal point of view, it's sad. BeReal is an app for teenagers, so this platform is very limited to a wide audience, and there are so many battle royale games in the App Store that even though I gave Apex an hour or so of my time, it didn't make sense to spend another one when it's only a dozen. Hence, so much disappointment at why Apple highlights titles that don't deserve it.
