Apple has officially discontinued AirPort routers tonight. This move follows last year's report that software development has ended and no further successor to the series is planned. The announcement of the complete cancellation of this product line was confirmed by a spokesperson for Apple to the foreign server iMore.

Three products are being discontinued: AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule. They will be available while supplies last, both on Apple's official website and at other retailers, either in the Apple Premium Reseller network or in other third-party stores. However, once they sell out, there won't be any more.

The above routers received the last hardware update in 2012 (Express), or 2013 (Extreme and Time Capsule). Two years ago, Apple began phasing out the software development process, and the employees who worked on these products were gradually transferred to other projects. The main reason for ending all efforts in this product segment was allegedly so that Apple could focus more on development in areas that make up a significant part of its income (i.e. mainly iPhones).

Since January, it is possible to buy routers from other manufacturers on Apple's official website, which include, for example, Linksys with the Velop Mesh Wi-Fi System model. In the future, there should be several more models that will be 'recommended' by Apple. Until then, it is available dokument, in which Apple provides some tips for customers buying new routers to follow. In the document, Apple describes several specifications that routers should have if you want to achieve seamless cooperation with Apple products. Parts and software support for AirPort models will be available for another five years. But after that comes the complete end.
