Streaming services are supposed to benefit not only subscribers, but also the artists whose works are placed on these services. According to the latest data from The Trichordist website, it offers performers the most advantages in this regard compared to the competition. In general, it is argued that streaming services are not very profitable, especially for smaller artists, compared to sales - either online or on physical media. Of all the available streaming services, however, Apple Music is the most profitable platform for artists in terms of earnings. In its regular annual report, The Trichoridst reports that Apple Music offers artists a higher "payout" per stream than other competing services.

The aforementioned report maps the state of streaming services for the calendar year 2019. The Trichordist calls streaming a "fully mature format" in its report and states that revenue from it represents one of the main earners for the recording industry. Streaming music in all its forms gained a 64% share of total revenue from the recording industry last year. On The Trichordist website, you can find a table with a total of thirty of the most popular streaming platforms. Of these thirty, the top ten platforms account for 93% of total music streaming revenue. The YouTube platform could be described as relatively unprofitable, although it has 51% of the total volume of all streams, but the income is only 6,4%.

As far as income for artists is concerned, Spotify offers $0,00348 (roughly CZK 0,08) per play, while Apple Music offers $0,00675 (roughly CZK 0,15). Apple Music offered one of the highest values per stream - $0,00783 - in 2017, while in 2018 it was $0,00495. The Trichordist attributes this fact to Apple's music streaming service expanding into new regions at the time. A number of users thus played the songs for free for some time as part of a one-month or even three-month free trial period.
