Following the introduction of the first ever iPhones supporting wireless charging, Apple has confirmed the acquisition of a company specializing in wireless charging based on the Qi standard. New Zealand-based PowerbyProxi, founded in 2007 by Fady Mishriki, originally at the University of Auckland, should be a great helper for the Apple company in creating a wireless future, according to Apple's senior vice president of hardware Dan Ricci. Specifically, Dan Riccio mentioned for the New Zealand website Stuff that "The PowerbyProxi team will be a great addition as Apple works toward a wireless future. We want to bring truly easy charging to more places and more customers around the world.”

It's not known exactly how much the company was bought for, or exactly how PowerbyProxi's existing engineers will complement Apple's existing team, but the company will continue to operate in Auckland, and founder Fady Mishriki and his team are excited. “We are really excited to join Apple. There is a huge alignment of our values and we are excited to continue our growth in Auckland and bring great innovation in wireless charging from New Zealand.”

Apple introduced wireless charging in September, together with iPhone 8 a iPhone X. However, he himself does not yet have a wireless charger ready, and he should not start selling his AirPower until the beginning of 2018. For now, owners of the iPhone 8 and, from November 3, the iPhone X, have to make do with alternative Qi chargers from third parties, such as Belkin or mophie.
