The Apple Beta Software Program allows users to try out an early version of the software. Their feedback on quality and usability then helps Apple identify problems, fix them, and improve the final version itself, which is released to the general public after testing.

As a member of Apple's software beta program, you'll be able to register your devices to access public beta versions and test their latest features. You can thus test the company's operating systems, i.e. iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS. If you want to sign up for testing, you can do so on the company's website her program designated.

Individual regularities

Currently, all major versions of the operating systems have already been released, however, e.g. decimal updates, which also bring various news, are still being tuned. But it goes without saying that the main purpose of the program is after the WWDC conference in June, at which the company annually presents its main innovations and then makes them available for testing - not only to developers but also to everyone who is involved in the Apple Beta Software Program. The only condition is to have your Apple ID.

Because you're actually offering your services (and devices) to Apple, the program is completely free. However, you can't expect Apple to pay you for reporting problems either. This program is voluntary and there is no reward for your participation. In no way is it considered as hacking the device, i.e. Jailbreak, so by installing a beta of a company's system you do not in any way violate its hardware warranty.

Error reporting

The public beta versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS come with a built-in Feedback Assistant app that can be opened from the home screen on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and from the dock on a Mac. However, the application is also available from the help menu of any application by selecting Send feedback.

If you're using the tvOS public beta, you can submit feedback through the Feedback Assistant app on a registered iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. When you run into a problem or something doesn't work as you expect, the whole point of the program is for you to send that information directly to Apple through this app and they can respond to it.

Recommendations and risks

Since the public beta version of the software has not yet been released, it may contain bugs or other inaccuracies, and of course it may not perform as well as later released software. So be sure to back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and Mac computers before installing the beta software. The only exception here is the Apple TV, whose purchases and data are stored in the cloud, so there is no need to specifically back it up.

Of course, Apple recommends installing beta software only on non-production devices that are not important to your work and business. It should be a secondary Mac system or the accessory itself. In extreme situations, applications may not work, but also theoretical data loss, etc.

Cancellation of testing

As long as your device is enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program, you'll automatically receive new public beta releases from iOS Software Update, the Mac App Store, tvOS Software Update, or watchOS Software Update. However, you can unregister your device at any time so that it no longer receives these updates.

On iOS go to Settings -> General -> VPN & Device Management and tap on the iOS & iPadOS Beta software profile shown here. Then tap Remove Profile. When the next version of iOS is released, you can install it from Software Update in the usual way.

In macOS go to System Preferences and select Software Update. Here on the left you will see the information that your Mac is enrolled in the Apple Beta Software program, click on the details below. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to restore the update defaults. Choose Restore Defaults. This will stop your Mac from receiving public betas. When the next version of macOS is released, you can install it from Software Update in System Preferences.

However, if you don't want to wait until the next hot version of that system is released, you can restore your device from a backup you made before installing the public beta. The problem here is only with the Apple Watch, which cannot be restored to previously released versions of the OS after installing the public beta version. If you want to leave the beta program completely, you can visit the pro page cancellation of registration, where at the very bottom, sign in with your Apple ID and continue according to the displayed information.
