Wi-Fi routers from Apple are slowly falling into oblivion. However, the company continues to pay marginal attention to them, at least as far as firmware updates are concerned. The proof is also the latest Update 7.9.1 for AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule, specifically for models with support for the 802.11ac standard.

The new update is purely security and contains bug fixes that could have been exploited by a potential attacker. With their help, it was then possible to, for example, deny access to certain services, obtain memory contents, or even run any code on the network element.

Apple has also improved the process of restoring a device to factory settings, where in certain cases all data may not be deleted. The complete list of patches that Update 7.9.1 brings is given by the company in official document on their website.

The end of a saga

Apple officially stopped the development and production of routers from the AirPort series more than a year ago. The main reason for ending all efforts in this product segment was allegedly the company's tendency to focus more on development in the areas that make up a significant part of its income, i.e. mainly iPhones and services.

The products were on offer until all stock was sold out, which in the case of the official Apple Online Store took approximately half a year. Currently, AirPort products are no longer available even from authorized resellers and other sellers. The only option is to buy a second-hand router through bazaar portals.
