If you've been browsing Internet forums discussing Internet privacy in recent months, you've probably come across a service with the rather unusual name of DuckDuckGo. It is an alternative Internet search engine whose main currency is a focus on the privacy of its users. For some needs, DuckDuckGo uses Apple services, and it is precisely in their case that several novelties have now appeared.

If you're not familiar with DuckDuckGo, it's an internet search engine that tries to offer an alternative to Google. For understandable reasons, it is not that capable, but it tries to compensate for its limited possibilities by relying on complete anonymity and respect for the privacy of its users. The service thus does not collect information in your "electronic fingerprint", does not track your advertising ID or send any data associated with viewing to third parties.

In the case of map data, DuckDuckGo uses Apple services and thus works on the Apple MapKit platform. It now gets some completely new features, which include, for example, support for Dark Mode (which starts when you have Dark Mode turned on on your device), a significantly improved search engine for points of interest in the vicinity, or improved prediction for entering searched places and objects based on the displayed region.

In the statement, the company's representatives emphasize again that in no case does it share user data with other companies (in this case with Apple) and any anonymized personal data used for local search purposes is immediately deleted after the user has used it. You can also try DuckDuckGo on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, you can choose it as the default search engine in Safari Settings. For obvious reasons, it doesn't work as well as Google's search engine yet (and probably never will), but it's usable. The important thing is that each user can choose which search services to use, with all their negatives and positives.
