Although Apple reported that iPads grew the fastest in the last six years, this still does not mean the end of classic computers. The tablet competition is hiding in our pockets.

Statistical data compiled by Digitimes Research reveal that, on the contrary, interest in tablets is declining worldwide. According to current data, analysts then predict a drop of up to 8,7% in the following second quarter of this year. However, tablets do not threaten traditional computers, smartphones do.

37,15 million tablets were shipped during the past quarter. Compared to the Christmas season in the fourth quarter of 2018, there was a 12,8% decrease, on the other hand, in a year-on-year comparison, the total number of tablets increased by 13,8%. This is primarily due to the company from Cupertino.

New iPad models, i.e. iPad Air (2019) and iPad mini 5, have significantly helped boost demand. But they weren't the only devices that did well. The competition also celebrated success, especially the Chinese company Huawei with its MediaPad M5 Pro tablet.

However, Apple remains the king in the field of tablets. In the end, the second place was surprisingly occupied by the just-mentioned Huawei, which was replaced by the Korean Samsung. Estimates for the next quarter predict that the ranking of the most successful tablet manufacturers will not change.

iPads and others are growing diagonally

Meanwhile, the size of smartphones is increasing and smaller tablets are slowly retreating from the market. In the first quarter, a full 67% of tablets had a diagonal of over 10". For the first time in the history of this category, devices of 10 inches or more had over 50% of total sales.

Apple once again dominated the processor field with its Ax SoC processors. Cupertino iPads thus confirm their supremacy. Second place was taken by Qualcomm with its ARM processors, which, among other things, also produces modems, and MediaTek took third place with its chipsets. The latter company supplies components for 7" and 8" tablets from Amazon, which are especially popular in the USA.

Several long-term trends can therefore be observed in the tablet market. Smaller diagonals are giving way to increasing smartphone displays and hybrid phablets. More and more users are choosing diagonals of 10 inches and more, probably as a replacement for laptops. And the drop in sales may also mean that users aren't willing to replace their tablet as often as they do with smartphones.
