When Phil Shiller finished introducing all the improvements to Apple's current line of laptops, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and said, "Hold on, I'll make room for another one over there," many of us were expecting another piece of groundbreaking hardware. It became the MacBook Pro (MBP) of the new generation with Retina display.
The same amazing display found on the iPhone 4S and the new iPad has also made it to the MacBook. After singing his praises, Shiller showed us a video in which Jony Ive describes the new design of fans to reduce the noise of this new machine.

So you can certainly see the lengths Apple's designers and engineers went to when they wanted to reinvent the Macintosh. But what is the new MacBook Pro with Retina display like in practice? That's what we tried to find out.
Why buy it?
As Anand Lal Shimpi of AnandTech.com writes, the new MacBook Pro is likely to be a draw for all types of users. The best display in the world for those who stare at their laptop all day. Less thickness and weight for those who travel a lot but still need quad core performance. And a non-negligible improvement of the graphics chip and the speed of the main memory by using flash technology instead of classic hard disks. Most potential users will be attracted by more than one of these advantages.
Comparison of MacBook Pro versions
So Apple presented an upgrade to the existing MacBook Pro line and a brand new MacBook Pro of the next generation. In the case of a 15" diagonal, you have a choice of two slightly different computers, the differences of which are indicated in the following table.

As you can see, the new generation MBP costs the same basic equipment as the current MBP with slightly more powerful internals. I think it won't be too difficult for most future MBP owners to choose, as the new MBP's display alone is reason enough to upgrade. So we will see how the existing MBP series will sell in the 15″ diagonal next to its much more attractive twin.
Different resolutions
Anand also had a chance to try out the new option to redraw content for certain resolutions on the new MBP. Although this new laptop natively uses a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels, it can also simulate a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels, in which all the elements on the screen are physically the same size, only much sharper thanks to four times the number of pixels on the same surface. For those who want to use more space at the expense of a smaller window size, there are resolutions of 1680 x 1050 pixels, suitable for example for movies, and 1920 x 1200 pixels, which is better for work. But here it's more about everyone's personal preferences. That's why Anand mentioned the advantage in the speed of switching between these resolutions, which one can get used to doing on a regular basis without it being too slow for them.
Different display technologies
In the original MacBook Pro computers (with glossy displays), Apple uses classic LCD displays, where two glass plates are covered by a third one, which at the same time covers the screen and smoothes it in relation to the edges of the notebook. This cover is absent from the matte MBPs and MacBook Air series, instead the LCD is just attached to the sides and partially covered by the edge of the metal cover. This configuration was also used by the new generation of MBP, where the outer layer of the display has a larger area, which partially fulfills the function of a cover glass as in the case of glossy screens, but does not bring so much unwanted reflection. It even achieves almost as good reflective properties as the matte screens that you can already pay extra for in the MBP series. In addition, Apple used the so-called IPS technology (In-Plane Switching) in the computer screen for the first time, which the displays of all new iOS devices have.
Contrast
Anand also describes the unprecedented sharpness of colors and excellent contrast in his first impressions. In addition to increasing the number of pixels, Apple also worked on the depth of black and white colors to create a display with the second best contrast on the market. This and the already mentioned IPS technology contribute to much wider viewing angles and an overall better enjoyment of colors.
Apps and Retina display?
Since Apple controls the creation of both hardware and software, it has an advantage in the speed of adapting its applications for a brand new screen. All the core applications of the Mac OS X Lion operating system have been adapted for the transition, and today you can use Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iMovie and of course the entire system in crystal clear resolution. Anand provides a comparison of the already new Safari and the not yet adapted Google Chrome on the Retina display. Here is a clear reason why any developer should modify their app if they want to retain users.
However, it shouldn't be a problem for OS X application developers to upgrade in a quick time. As with iOS and the transition to Retina resolution, it will usually be enough to add images with the extension @2x and four times the size, the operating system will already choose them by itself. More work probably awaits game developers, which may not be as flexible. However, most of the most popular games like Diablo III and Portal 2 already count on different screen resolutions, so we will hope for a quick response from other developers as well.
Accidentally discovered differences
After a day, Anand was able to discover certain differences that one might not immediately recognize and he himself discovered them mainly thanks to the fact that he had the original MBP series to compare.
1. Better function of the SD card slot. It looks like it works for more cards than its predecessor for the first time.
2. The keys won't allow as much denting as before. Either it is an increased stiffness or a reduced height of the keys.
3. Although it's more convenient to travel with than its non-Retina predecessor, it's still not as practical in a bag as the MacBook Air.
Most of these observations are gathered after only about a day's use, more differences will certainly appear as time goes on. However, so far it seems that Apple has invested enough time in testing, given that no major errors or differences have yet appeared. Of course, it will depend on the reaction of the masses of users who will receive the new Retina MacBook Pro in the mail in the coming weeks. So we will continue to monitor everything.
however, the price is brutal. given the exchange rate of the crown and the average salary in CR, I can't think for whom it is intended. 60 thousand Czech crowns for a portable laptop!? WTF? who is worth this improvement against the original mbpro for 10 crowns against the version without retina? even so, that's the price compared to wages in CR from the point of view. the pro buys a mac pro, or macbook or imac. I'll just remind you that ordinary laptops from other manufacturers with the same performance, but without OSX, range in price from 25 kc.
I doubt that it will have the same performance or display. Of course, not everyone can afford this laptop, but the best laptop in the world could never afford it. The point is that Apple presented the future of the laptop, which the other manufacturers will start to copy again in the next few years, and Apple itself will of course lower prices as soon as the production conditions allow it. Besides the fact that it is the first such large Retina display in the world, I would say that the price is quite low, considering that in my area people have configured laptops for around 70-90 thousand quite cheaply (and not only Macs).
The price is high, but totally worth what ntb offers. What is revolutionary about this: Sony Vaio Z21V9E/B, for example? The price is about 60 CZK, and friends, I would like to see how this laptop looks after 1 year of wear and use.
It is as you write BUT, with the same performance it is possible, but when you take into account the quality of processing, the materials used and the overall emphasis on details, even in the PC world you get similar prices for a portable computer.
It's like in cars - 200 horses in a Skoda is not like 200 horses in a BMW :-))))
It depends on what you are buying such a computer for, if you have an average salary and the computer does not support you, then it will be very expensive for you. If a computer is a production tool for you, just like a car is for a taxi driver, and your monthly income is around the price of that computer, then this is not a problem. I bought the current MBP 17″ in 2007 and I have nothing to complain about except the misery of Adobe CS5. If I then calculate the price of such a computer for 5 years, it is a negligible amount compared to what I will pay for SW during that time. It just always depends on how you look at the price of the given product.
A simple consideration – if someone wanted a "normal" 15" MBPro, but with a 512 SSD drive, the extra charge is such a massacre that they can buy a 15" Retina, if they want, and still save money... So the price in the end it is not as terrible as it seems at first glance... 58.490 + 23.400 vs. 74.990 – ok, you can't upgrade the memory in the retina, some ports have to be solved with a reduction and it doesn't have an optical drive, but the display alone is a big attraction in my opinion, why think about it...
A person with an average Czech salary also does not buy a BMW, but only, for example, a Skoda, etc. Especially if he does not use the car for business.
This laptop is intended for 3 groups of people:
1. I need it for work - make money for yourself
2. fajnsmekrov, kt. I don't need it, but they simply like technology, and even if they don't earn much, they will treat themselves to it, while they have to limit themselves in other things, such as they are not important to them
3. People who have money, I don't need it, but when I have it, I only buy the best :)
finally some manufacturer came up with an advisory display for laptops. I've been saying for several years that you can't look at a laptop display, but no one from the acer/hp/sony cartel, etc., had the desire to break established advice... and the price: it wasn't long ago when laptops became five- to tenfold in comparison to the average salary, so I it doesn't seem that much considering the features…
… just a little comment on that. I have it ordered. I use MBP for work and at home, and I have to say that I've had the one I'm going to get rid of now since 2008, and if I didn't want a new toy, I'd last with it. And that's how I know that even a new toy will work to its full potential even after 4 or 5 years. I have had several PCs - but there is no possibility of reasonable work with it for more than 2 years. Or maybe yes?
I would be interested in the comparison of the 15″ retina with the 17″ front, if it is worth thinking about changing or staying, does anyone have a link, thanks
Apple certainly did not use IPS technology for the first time in a computer screen, rather a laptop...
God, where did you get the price of 60 thousand? I saw it for 40... otherwise I'm running out of patience with people who keep complaining about the price... oh my god, the competition doesn't have aluminum laptops with such an amazing glass display and 4 cores plus mac os x... the Czechs would prefer everything for free... when on you don't have money so don't complain and don't look at such things at all.
Give me the contact of the store that offers a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display for 40 including VAT. I would definitely take one for that price.
Prices are from http://store.apple.com/cz/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
But the price tells me that they made only one model...
fail, upgrade the laptop board in X years... the team cancels the 17ct board and only upgrades the 15ct... moreover, it's only about the display... shame
I have the feeling that it is an accelerated presentation before new devices (hybrid ultrabooks/tablets) with Windows 8 begin to be distributed en masse
Just for the display? weight reduction by 0.5kg, bulk, standard SSD, graphics to tighten the resolution as well, ventilation to cool the performance and not be noisy at the same time? Some people have no judgment and would like a water fountain…
The 13-inch upgrade will come when it is worth selling to them and I will be able to solve all the problems associated with it.
The article is almost imperceptible in the mobile template on the iPhone! It looks really cool.
I think of the retina as a bell, just a display with a higher pixel density. On the other hand, when it comes to meaning, Apple laptops are known for the fact that work with them is not as difficult as working on a desktop, but it is quite a feasible matter. The trackpad in conjunction with the Mac OS has a lot to do with this. I myself prefer to work on my MBP in a semi-reclining position rather than twisting on a wall. The only advantage of the desktop for me is the size of the display, which I don't always use and which actually pulls down the retina a bit.
On a funny note: superficial girls have your laptop in those interesting other parameters :)
A fan with asymmetrically positioned blades - I don't know if anyone has ever used it and I don't care, it's not a great innovation, in any case it's true that many of today's laptops have problems with squealing cooling and if it helps, it's great from my point of view plus.
If the resulting "quality" of the product should be like that of a Sony notebook, it is perhaps better that Apple develop the rear, or what you call development does not work. I know all about it, I've had enough of it. I take the overpriced advice from Z at mercy, the rest is polished Chinese garbage. If there is interest, I am able to divorce.
I don't have much personal experience with IBM/Lenovo laptops, so I don't dare to make an assessment. But in general, from what I know secondhand, I consider them to be the best among Win machines, even despite complaints about declining quality since the days of Lenovo.
I have a genuine lenovo t410 and it's a nice piece of crap. After a year of intensive use, daily handling, everything squeaks. The battery lasts about 4 hours, and at the same time it takes more than what comes out of the laptop. From the beginning, when the laptop is not connected to the network and runs on battery power, it sometimes switches to strange colors, and I do this to all my colleagues around me, etc...
Well, as you can see, experiences are different. As I wrote, I don't know Lenovo, I only hear things, so I don't rate. Overall, I think that looking for quality among Win notebooks today is quite a punishment, I don't see any back horse in the game that would be a safe bet.
as I said, it's not a backward development after X years, all competitors have SSDs, all of them can also make a lighter laptop, and almost all of them can cool it so that it doesn't burn on the thighs... in this, Apple is catching up with the competition... and the only one that can make a laptop after X years is Lip retina? fail
I kind of don't understand the point of these discussions. Who are they for? To those who want and can buy it? They decide on the basis of their own reasoning, or on the basis of expert reviews. To those who don't want to buy it or can't? Already decided, need to confirm the decision? By the way, a piece of good work undoubtedly done by Apple and how are some of the debaters?
