Apple is reportedly working on a proprietary high-fidelity audio format that will allow its AirPods to stream Apple Music losslessly. This is at least claimed by the fairly successful leaker Jon Prosser, whose success rate is almost 80% in various predictions. And there would be absolutely no reason not to believe him, since Apple itself states that its AirPods do not allow lossless listening "currently". And what does it mean? That it could change.

AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max use the lossy AAC format to stream audio over Bluetooth, and have no way to stream lossless ALAC or FLAC files (even when AirPods Max are connected via a cable). Jon Prosser reports that Apple will unveil a new audio format to better stream lossless music at some point in the future. Although he does not specify the term, at least one would be offered.

Apple may be setting a new trend

He already did the opposite of the strategy, i.e. first introduce the service for third parties and then his product benefiting from it, with AirTag. This situation could therefore be similar, with his competitors then not being able to accuse him of unfair competition. Since AirPods do not have Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2 technology cannot be used. The only way to improve existing models is to implement a new high-fidelity format supporting Bluetooth 5.0. So if Apple is really planning something similar, it will probably show us at WWDC, which starts at the beginning of June.

So now another door is opening for more speculation. Even though WWDC is purely a software affair, with the new format, Apple could also introduce new headphones here, of course the 3rd generation AirPods. Given that with Apple Music HiFi, the company mentioned that this feature will come in June along with iOS 14.6, iPadOS 14.6, tvOS 14.6 and macOS 11.4, it would directly suggest that it would be just after WWDC and just after the presentation of the mentioned news. Either way, we'll find out on June 7th.
