It's April here, so the rainy weather is not surprising. But it doesn't matter if you get caught in a spring shower, a summer storm, or you're covered in sweat after some activity. If you currently have AirPods in your ears, the question arises whether you should worry about them and clean them up, or continue listening.

It depends on the model

As Apple has upgraded its AirPods over time, it has also made them more durable. If you reach for the first or second generation of AirPods, Apple does not specify any water resistance. So it means that they can actually be easily damaged by some moisture. The situation is different in the case of the 3rd generation AirPods or both AirPods Pro.

Whether you use 3rd generation AirPods with a Lightning or MagSafe case, not only the headphones but also their case are sweat and water resistant. The same goes for AirPods Pro 1st and 2nd generation. Apple states that these AirPods are IPX4 waterproof and meet the IEC 60529 standard. However, their water resistance is not permanent and may decrease over time due to normal wear and tear.

Apple also states that its AirPods are not intended for use in the shower or for water sports such as swimming. The mentioned resistance therefore applies more precisely with regard to humidity, so sweat or accidental splashing of water on the headphones, i.e. in the case of rain. Logically, they should not be exposed to water on purpose, which is also the difference between waterproof and waterproof - after all, they should not be put under running water, immersed in water, or worn in a steam room or sauna.

The water creates a certain pressure, which when it grows, it pushes the water through the small holes of the AirPods. However, if the headphones are only splashed with liquid, then due to the density of the water, it will not penetrate into their bowels. So keep in mind that even running or splashing water can damage the AirPods in a certain way. There is generally no way to repair Apple headphones, check their water resistance or additionally seal them.
