Today, the iOS App Store passed another important milestone. After less than five years of operation, it conquered the goal of an incredible 50 billion downloads. This is the third time the App Store has made history since its launch in July 2008.

The first big success of this store can be considered the crossing of 10 billion downloads, which occurred in January 2011. The App Store surpassed 25 billion downloads just one year later. Earlier this year, Apple announced that over 40 billion apps for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches have already been downloaded from their store. So it was clear that the fifty-billion mark would be surpassed already this year. And it happened.

The Cupertino company started a countdown on its website a while ago showing the approaching 50 billion downloads mark. At the same time, it also organized a competition for iOS users. It has been announced that the lucky person who downloads the 50 billionth app will receive a $10 gift card for App Store purchases. Another fifty lucky ones will then receive the same gift, but with a value of $000. Of course, it is not yet known who the winner is, but Apple will probably announce the name of the winner in the next few days.

Let us recall that the 25 billionth application went to the Chinese Chunli Fu, who flew to the Beijing headquarters of Apple for her win. The 10 billionth app was downloaded by Gail Davis from Kent, UK. Davis was even personally contacted by Eddy Cuo, one of Apple's top men at the time.

Apple has already announced the name of this year's grand prize winner, and he is Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio. The 50 jubilee downloaded app has become Say the Same Thing. Eddy Cue commented on the event in a press release:

“On behalf of all of Apple, I'd like to thank our great customers and developers for helping us reach 50 billion app downloads. The App Store completely changed the way we use mobile phones and created a wildly successful ecosystem that generated $9 billion in revenue for developers. We are absolutely thrilled with what we have accomplished in less than 5 years.”
