For compatible AirPods models, audio switches between devices connected to the same Apple ID automatically. But you can speed up the switching even with the first generation AirPods. Automatic ear detection
One of the features that traditional AirPods offer is automatic ear detection. Thanks to this function, your headphones will recognize when you have them on. The moment you take off the AirPods, the playback will be automatically paused, after putting them on, it will resume again. However, if for any reason this state does not suit you, start on your iPhone Settings -> Bluetooth. Put on your AirPods and then v the Bluetooth menu click on their name. In menu, which will be displayed to you, then just deactivate the item Automatic ear detection.

Change the microphone
By default, when using AirPods, the microphone automatically switches between the right and left earpiece during calls. If you only want the microphone to be activated on one of your headphones, start on your iPhone Settings -> Bluetooth. Put on your AirPods and then to the right of their name click on ⓘ. Click on Microphone and then in menu choose which of the headphones should have the microphone activated.

If you use the native Shortcuts app on your iPhone, you can also use individual shortcuts when using your AirPods. I personally liked the AirStudio shortcut, which allows advanced volume adjustments, music source selection, advanced settings and much more.

Rename your AirPods
Do you find the default name of your AirPods too boring? No problem - you can give them any name on your iPhone. Put on your AirPods and start on your iPhone Settings. Click on Bluetooth and then tap ⓘ to the right of the name of your AirPods. In menu, which appears to you, find it the Name item, tap it and name the AirPods as you like.
