The macOS Monterey operating system, along with other latest systems, comes with countless great features that are definitely worth it. In our magazine, we have been working on all new features for several long weeks, which only confirms their high number. We've already looked at many of them together - of course, we've focused mostly on the biggest and most important features. However, I must point out that macOS Monterey includes extremely useful features that are not talked about at all. In this article, we'll take a look at 5 such features that are absolutely great, but nobody really pays attention to them. As they say, there is strength in simplicity, and in this case it is doubly true.

Photos in News

Nowadays, we can use countless chat applications for communication. For example, Messenger is available on Mac, as well as WhatsApp, Viber and others. But we mustn't forget about the native Messages application as well, within which it is possible to use the iMessage service. Thanks to it, you can write for free with all other users who own any Apple device. If you are one of the users of Messages on Mac, you surely know that if someone sent you multiple pictures or photos, they were displayed separately one by one directly below each other. If you then wanted to display the text above these photos, you had to scroll for a long time. However, this changes in macOS Monterey, as multiple sent images or photos are displayed in Messages in a collection that takes up the same space as a single photo. In addition, you can now also download a received image or photo in Messages with a single tap on the button next to it.

Orange and green dot

If you've turned on the front camera on your Mac at least once, you've probably noticed the green LED next to it. This green diode serves as a safety feature to tell you that your camera is on. According to Apple, there is no way around this system, and this diode is activated absolutely every time the camera is turned on. Not long ago, we saw the display of this diode, i.e. the dot on the display, also in iOS. In addition to the green dot, however, an orange dot also began to appear here, which in turn indicates an active microphone. In macOS Monterey, we also saw the addition of this orange dot - it appears when the microphone is active in the upper right corner of the screen. After clicking on the control center, you can see which applications are using the microphone or camera.

Improved Open Folder functionality

If you want to open any location or folder on your Mac, you can of course use the Finder, in which you click through to where you need to go. However, more experienced users know that they can use the Open Folder function within the Finder. If you click on Open folder, until now you were shown a small window in which you had to enter the exact path of the folder, which you could then open. With the arrival of macOS Monterey, this option has been improved. In particular, it has a new, more modern design, which resembles Spotlight, but in addition, it can also give hints to users and automatically complete the path. To view the Open folder, go to Finder, then tap on in the top bar Display and finally choose from the menu Open the folder.

Erase your Mac quickly and easily

If you've ever sold a Mac in the past, or if you've wanted to do a clean install, you'll know that it wasn't exactly a cakewalk - and certainly not for the average user. Specifically, you had to go into macOS Recovery mode, where you formatted the drive, and then reinstalled macOS. So this process was relatively complicated for classic users, and the good news is that in macOS Monterey we got a simplification. Now you can delete your Mac quickly and easily, just like you do on an iPhone or iPad, for example. To delete your Mac, just tap in the upper left corner on  → System Preferences. Then click on in the top bar system preferences, and then select Erase data and settings… A window will then appear with a wizard that you just need to go through and completely erase your Mac.

Simple display of passwords

If you use Apple devices to the maximum, you undoubtedly also use Keychain on iCloud. All your passwords can be stored in it, so you don't have to remember them and you only need to authorize yourself in some way when logging in. In addition, the keychain can also invent all passwords, so you have one less thing to worry about in this case as well. In certain cases, however, you may want to display some passwords, for example if you need to log in on another device or share it. To do this on Mac, you had to use the native Keychain application, which until now has been relatively confusing and unnecessarily complicated for the average user. The engineers at Apple realized this too and came up with a new simple display of all passwords, which is similar to that of iOS or iPadOS. You can find it by tapping into  → System Preferences, to open the section passwords, and then you authorize yourself.
