Here it is. Christmas is just around the corner, and with it, in addition to the traditional shopping frenzy, there is also an atmosphere that everyone is trying to capture with their smartphone. But as is well known, smartphone cameras usually do not excel in poor lighting, which is so typical for Christmas time. In this article, we therefore present 5 tips for taking pictures in poor light, which will certainly come in handy this Advent.

Use portrait mode

Dual-camera iPhones since the 7th generation include a portrait mode that can blur the background and allow the main subject to stand out. In addition, photos taken in this mode are characterized by better lighting. This makes for a great combination especially for fine art images that focus on detail. However, portrait mode can improve a photo in other cases as well, so it's always worth trying.

Don't focus on the lights

Marking the part of the image to be in focus seems like a logical solution. However, in the case of Christmas lights, it is better not to focus on a specific area, as this will cause a significant darkening or blurring of everything else. However, in certain cases, this tip is not entirely suitable, and it is necessary to focus on a specific place for the image to look good. This advice should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.

Take photos at sunset or dusk

If possible, try to avoid taking pictures at night. The best photos of the Christmas markets can be taken during sunset or dusk. Christmas lights stand out beautifully even if the sky is not completely dark. In addition, thanks to more light at dusk, the surroundings will be better lit and all details will not be lost in the shadows.

Try a third-party app

Third-party applications can also significantly improve low-light photography. For example, the author has a very positive experience with the application Night Cam!, which can actually take perfect iPhone photos even at night. However, you usually cannot do without a tripod. It also offers, for example, Camera + possibility to adjust ISO, which can be useful when shooting at night.

Stick to traditional principles

For perfect pictures, traditional photography tips should not be forgotten. That is, when photographing people, hold the smartphone at their eye level, try not to photograph against strong light sources and, as necessary, adjust the brightness of the image using the sliders directly in the Camera application. Another established tip is to focus on capturing events and situations instead of fake smiles and annoying "Say cheese!". The fact that it is necessary to check whether the camera lens is clean before taking pictures, and if necessary to clean it, probably does not need to be mentioned, however, even such a small thing has ruined otherwise wonderful photos for more than one user.
