Every time you turn on or open your Mac, you must sign in to your account through the lock screen. Most of you have probably already customized, for example, the top bar, the Dock, the control center or the notification center - but did you know that you can also customize this login environment? In this article, we'll take a look at 5 tips and tricks to customize your Mac login.

Custom lock screen message

You can add any custom message to the bottom of your Mac's lock screen. For example, you can use this to include your contact information, such as phone number and email, which will give you a better chance of getting your lost Mac back, since the finder will at least be able to contact you. To set a custom lock screen message, go to  → System Preferences → Security & Privacy. Here, using the lock on the bottom left authorize a activate Show message on lock screen. Then tap on Set Message…, where are you type the message.

Showing sleep, restart, and shutdown buttons

On the lock screen, the sleep, restart and shutdown buttons are also displayed at the bottom, among other things. If you would like to deactivate the display of these buttons, or if you do not have them here and would like to return them, go to  → System Preferences → Users and Groups → Login Options. Here, using the lock on the bottom left authorize and subsequently as needed (de)activate Show Sleep, Restart and Shutdown buttons.

Change your profile picture

When you create a profile, you can also set a profile picture on your Mac. For a long time in macOS, you could only choose from a few pre-made ones and, if necessary, you could upload your own photo. However, in macOS Monterey, the options for setting a profile picture have expanded considerably, so there is definitely a lot to choose from. You can set, for example, Memoji, emoticons, a monogram, your own photo, pre-prepared images from macOS and more to your profile picture. You just need to go to  → System Preferences → Users and Groups, where to choose on the left your profile, and then navigate to current photo, where at the bottom click on small arrow. Then just set your profile picture.

Adding a Guest profile

Do you lend your Mac to someone from time to time? If so, you might want to use the Guest profile, which you can access through the lock screen. If you activate the Guest profile, the option to log in to a one-time profile is created. This means that when the user logs in to the Guest profile and performs some actions, they will be irretrievably deleted after logging out - the entire session is therefore only one-time and temporary. To activate the Guest profile, go to  → System Preferences → Users and Groups, where by tapping on the lock authorize and then click on the left Guest. Then it's enough activate Allow guests to log on to the computer.

Login via Apple Watch

There are different ways to sign in to your Mac. Of course, the most basic way is to enter a username and password, but you can easily unlock newer Macs and MacBooks using Touch ID. However, there is also a third option that you can use if you own an Apple Watch. So if you have an unlocked Apple Watch on your hand and try to log in to your Mac, you will be authenticated automatically through the watch, without the need to enter a password. This function can be activated in  → System Preferences → Security & Privacy, where by tapping on the lock at the bottom left authorize and then activate function Unlock apps and Mac with Apple Watch.
