When working on a Mac, we practically cannot do without the Finder. This native component of the macOS operating system is an essential tool for working with folders and files. In today's article, we will introduce you to five useful tips and tricks, thanks to which you can really customize the Finder on your Mac to the maximum.

Merging Finder windows

Some of us tend to have multiple Finder windows open at once while working. But in such cases, it can sometimes happen that the monitor of your Mac becomes unclear. Fortunately, the Finder offers an option to merge windows for these situations. Just click at the top of your Mac screen Window -> Merge all windows.

Better resolution of items

In the Finder on Mac, you also have the option to mark individual files and folders with colored labels, thanks to which you can distinguish them more easily and you will find your way around them much better. You can assign multiple labels to individual files and folders at once. To mark a file or folder with a label, just click on the label icon v at the top of the Finder window, or click on the toolbar at the top of your Mac screen File and select the appropriate brand in the menu.

View file extensions

By default, files appear in the Finder without extensions indicating their specific format. But this can be very impractical in many cases. If you want files to appear with attachments in the Finder on your Mac, click Finder -> Preferences on the toolbar at the top of your Mac screen. At the top of the preferences window, select Advanced and tick option to display file extensions.

Quickly adjust column widths

Need to quickly and easily adjust the width of columns in the Finder on Mac to get a better overview of their content? Just double-click the bottom of the dividing line between the columns. The width of the column will automatically increase after this step so that you can easily read the entire longest folder name. Another option is to hold the Option (Alt) key and drag the mouse to adjust the width of the column. The width of all columns in the Finder will automatically adjust.

Editing the toolbar

At the top of the Finder window on your Mac, you'll find a variety of tools for working with folders and files. But we don't always need all the tools that are in this bar. In the same way, it may happen that some of the tools that might be useful to you, on the contrary, you will not find on this bar. To customize the content of the toolbar, right-click on the toolbar. Select in the menu that appears Edit toolbar. You can then simply add or remove individual elements by dragging the mouse.
