An integral part of every iPhone and other Apple devices is also the voice assistant Siri, without which many Apple owners cannot imagine working. Thus, many users use dictation, which can be considered a faster alternative to typing. Both of these "voice functions" are simply great and Apple is of course trying to improve them constantly. We also received several new features in iOS 16, and in this article we will look at 5 of them together.

Suspend Siri

Unfortunately, Siri is still not available in Czech, although this improvement is being talked about more and more often. However, this is not a problem for many users, as Siri communicates in English, or in another supported language. However, if you are one of those people who are just learning English or another language, it might be useful for you if Siri slowed down a bit. In iOS 16, there is a new feature that makes Siri pause after you say your request, so you have time to "compare". You can set this news in Settings → Accessibility → Siri, where in the category Siri pause time set the desired option.

Offline commands

If you own an iPhone XS and later, you can also use Siri offline, i.e. without an Internet connection, for some basic tasks. If you have an older iPhone, or if you want to solve a more complicated request, you must already be connected to the Internet. However, as far as offline commands are concerned, Apple slightly expanded them in iOS 16. In particular, you can control part of the home, send intercom and voice messages, and more without an Internet connection.

All application options

Siri can do a lot, not only in native applications, but also in third-party ones. Most apple users use absolutely basic functions and often have no idea about the more complicated ones. Precisely for this reason, Apple has added a new function for Siri in iOS 16, thanks to which you can learn what options you have in a specific application using the apple voice assistant. All you have to do is say the command directly in the app "Hey Siri, what can I do here", possibly outside the application "Hey Siri, what can I do with [app name]".

Dictation in Messages

Most users use dictation primarily in the Messages application, where of course it makes the most sense for dictating messages. Until now, we could only start dictation in Messages by tapping the microphone in the bottom right of the keyboard. In iOS 16, this option remains, but now you can also start dictation by tapping the microphone on the right side of the message text box. Unfortunately, this button has replaced the original button for recording an audio message, which is definitely a shame considering that dictation can now be activated in two ways, and to start recording an audio message we have to go to a special section through the bar above the keyboard.

Turn off dictation

As I mentioned above, dictation can be turned on in any application by tapping the microphone icon in the lower right part of the keyboard. In exactly the same way, users could also turn off dictation. However, there is also a new way to turn off ongoing dictation. Specifically, all you have to do is simply tap on when you're done dictating microphone icon with a cross, which appears at the cursor position, i.e. exactly where the dictated text ends.
