Goodbye, Soviet Union

The eccentric Tarkkinen family lives in the Soviet Union. They are the Ingrian Finns, the largest Finnish-speaking minority in present-day Russia, and they live in an area that was completely Russified after World War II. Johannes grows up with his grandparents in a remote part of Leningrad. His absentee mother occasionally returns from work in Finland to bring him coveted goods from the West. Johannes, who is often alone and in trouble, falls in love with his friend Vera. However, the Soviet Union is collapsing, and he sets out with his crazy hippie mother on an adventure for the western breeze of freedom. A kind and satirical look at growing up in non-traditional circumstances, it discusses the universal desire for independence.
