Just before WWDC, Apple released its Newsroom a report on how it fights for quality content on its App Store digital content distribution store. It's meant to be a safe and trusted place for people to discover and download apps to their iOS and iPadOS devices. What interesting things did his report reveal?

Last year, Apple released a fraud prevention analysis that showed it protected customers from losing more than $2020 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions in 1,5 alone. In its 2021 update, it mentions that this is the same number it achieved by blocking more than 1,6 million risky apps and their updates. But he also banned developer accounts and took care of our payment information.

App review

In 2021, more than 835 problematic new apps and another 805 app updates were rejected or removed for various reasons. As part of the app review process, any developer who believes they have been wrongly flagged as a cheater can file an appeal with the App Review Board. But this happens only to a limited extent, because developers know why their application is not pushed. If they do not contain errors, it is because of a violation of the terms of the App Store.

In 2021 alone, the App Review team rejected more than 34 apps because they contained hidden or undocumented features, and up to 157 apps were rejected because they were found to be spam, knock-offs of existing apps, or trying to trick users into making an unjustified purchase.

Fraudulent ratings

Ratings and reviews in the App Store serve as a source of information for users and developers. Many rely on this feature to help them decide whether to actually download the app. But false ratings pose a risk to the App Store because they can lead users to download, and in many cases buy, an untrusted app. An improved review approval system that combines technology and human teams of experts allows Apple to reduce fake reviews.

With more than 1 billion ratings and reviews processed during 2021, Apple detected and blocked more than 94 million reviews and more than 170 million reviews that were not published due to failure to meet moderation standards. Another 610 thousand reviews were also removed after publication based on feedback from App Store users.

Developer account scam

If developer accounts are used for fraudulent purposes, Apple will of course cancel it. In 2021, the company canceled more than 802 thousand such accounts and rejected another 153 thousand new developer registrations from developers due to concerns about possible fraud, which of course also prevented these entities from submitting their malicious apps to the App Store.

Payment and credit card fraud

Because financial information is a sensitive topic, Apple has invested heavily in creating more secure payment technologies such as Apple Pay and StoreKit. You use more than 905 thousand applications to sell goods and services in Apple's digital store. E.g. with Apple Pay, credit card numbers are never shared with merchants, eliminating the risk factor in the payment transaction process.
