The most diverse applications, depending on the type, should serve either for entertainment, education or be useful in any way. But in history, we can find many cases when the given application was either directly created with not very good intentions, or its use simply got out of hand. Which apps and services are associated with not-so-pleasant stories?

Randonautica

Especially during the lockdowns, the popularity of the Randonautica application, or similar applications, began to rise. The idea of the app itself is interesting. Very simply, it could be said that the user sets a certain intention, or chooses a type of goal. The application then generates the coordinates for him to go to. Along with the growing popularity of Randonautica, more or less terrifying (and more or less believable) stories started to appear on the Internet about what terrifying finds users came across while randonouting. Among the most famous affairs connected with Randonautica is the discovery of a suitcase with human remains on the seashore.

Girls Around Me

In 2012, an affair broke out around an application called Girls Around Me. It was an application that, using data from Facebook and Foursquare, was able to transmit data on the current location of users to Google Maps in real time. The target audience for this app was men, whom the app invited to personally search for and message nearby girls based on information it obtained about them from their Facebook profiles, including their photo galleries. Girls Around Me quickly gained a bad reputation as a "stalking" app, and was soon taken down.

Bulli Bai

Less well-known, but rather disturbing, is the scandal associated with the Bulli Bai application. In the Bulli Bai application, photos of prominent Muslim journalists and activists were published without consent, and subsequently virtual auctions took place there. While the app wasn't actually selling anyone, it was harassing and humiliating these women. After outrage over the app, the app was removed from the GitHub internet platform where it was originally hosted. In the case, charges have already been filed against the creators of the application.

Bonus: Omegle

Years ago, the Omegle platform was very popular. After you signed up on Omegle, you could chat with a complete stranger who you didn't know if he was your neighbor or on the other side of the planet. For a while, Omegle was even used by popular YouTubers who gave their fans the chance to meet virtually. But you could also connect to Omegle via webcam, which is what most users did. And it was precisely the possibility to show oneself on the webcam that made Omegle literally a paradise for all kinds of predators who often looked for minor victims. For example, there was a media report about a man who entered Roblox as a keyword on Omegle, which often linked him to children on the platform. He then showed himself naked to them. "I come here to make friends and it's fun to make friends naked" he defended himself afterwards.
