3D Touch technology has been a part of iPhones for the past few years, and it seems that its life cycle is coming to an end. So far, it looks like 3D Touch will be replaced by a technology called Haptic Touch, which is found in the iPhone XR, among others.

The new iPhone XR no longer supports 3D Touch due to the technological complexity of applying this solution to an already complex LCD panel. Instead, the new, cheaper iPhone has a feature called Haptic Touch that somewhat replaces 3D Touch. However, its use is considerably more limited.

Haptic Touch, unlike 3D Touch, does not register the force of the press, but only its duration. To display contextual options within the user interface, it is sufficient to hold your finger on the phone's display for a longer time. However, the absence of a pressure sensor means that Haptic Touch can only be used in limited cases.

A long press on an app icon on an iPhone's unlocked screen has always allowed icons to be moved or apps to be deleted. This functionality will remain. However, iPhone XR owners have to say goodbye to extended options after using 3D Touch on the application icon (i.e. various shortcuts or quick access to specific functions). The haptic response was preserved.

Currently, Haptic Touch only works in a few cases – for example, to activate the flashlight or camera from the locked screen, for the peek&pop function or in the control center. According to server information The Verge, which tested the iPhone XR last week, Haptic Touch functionality will be expanded.

Apple should gradually release new functions and options associated with this type of control. It is not yet clear how fast and to what extent the news will increase. However, it can be expected that the next iPhones will no longer have 3D Touch, as it would be nonsense to use two similar, albeit mutually exclusive, control systems. In addition, the implementation of 3D Touch significantly increases the production price of display panels, so it can be expected that if Apple figures out how to replace 3D Touch with software, it will definitely do so.

By removing the hardware limitation associated with 3D Touch, Haptic Touch could appear in a much larger number of devices (such as iPads, which never had 3D Touch). If Apple really got rid of 3D Touch, would you miss the feature? Or do you practically not use it?
