The second iOS 13 beta is since last night available to developers and along with it comes a lot of news and other improvements to iPhones. For example, Apple enriched the Portrait mode with a new effect, added support for the SMB protocol and the APFS format to the Files application, or improved the sorting of lists in the Notes application.

While iOS 13 beta 1 could only be installed in iTunes / Finder with the help of the corresponding IPSW file, in the case of the second beta version, the update process is much simpler, because it is available as an OTA (over-the-air) update. However, developers must first install a configuration profile on their device, which they obtain from developer.apple.com. After that, all you have to do is restart the iPhone and download the update in Settings. Installing the public beta version for testers, which should be available during July at beta.apple.com, will be similarly simple.

What's new in iOS 13 beta 2

This is the second iOS 13 beta with several new features, but in most cases these are minor news related to specific applications from Apple. Interesting changes have been made, for example, to the Camera on newer iPhone models, as well as the Files, Notes and Messages applications. Partial changes then occurred in Safari, Mail and also in the field of HomePod, CarPlay and the VoiceControl function.

  1. The Files app now supports connecting to a server via the SMB protocol, making it easy to connect to, for example, a home NAS.
  2. Files also brings support for APFS-formatted drives.
  3. Portrait mode gets a new effect called Black and White high-key light with different lighting (only available on new iPhones).
  4. Portrait mode now offers a slider for determining the intensity of illumination (only available on new iPhones).
  5. Screen Time idle time now syncs with Apple Watch
  6. In the Notes application, a completed (checked) item is automatically placed at the end of the list. The behavior can be adjusted in the settings.
  7. Memoji stickers (stickers from your own Animoji) offer other new gestures – thoughtful face, crossed fingers, silence gesture, etc.
  8. When sharing a page in Safari, there is a new option to learn whether the page will be shared as a PDF or a web archive. There is also automatic selection, where the most suitable format is selected for each application or action.
  9. The Mail application once again offers the option to tag all emails at once.
  10. When Voice Control is active, a blue microphone icon is now displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.
  11. The Calendar application has slightly modified colors and a slightly improved interface.
  12. A switch to enable/disable link previews has been added to Safari settings.
  13. When you delete the application, the system rechecks whether you have an active subscription in it. If so, then it will notify you of this fact and offer you to keep the application on your phone, or to manage the subscription.
  14. New sound when invoking the context menu on the application icon.
  15. When responding to an iMessage in the Messages app, there are new sounds that vary depending on the response selected (see video below).
